Full-Time Mom, Full-Time Employed and FULL-TIME PREGNANT

I'M BAAACK!
I know my blogging has been slow. (Understatement). I've just been out-of-my-mind busy with my now 2.5 year old, with being a part-time grad student pursuing my MLIS (Master of Library and Information Studies), working full-time at a University Library (and prior to that at a public library and at a daycare), and with our recent move. PLUS, being pregnant of course is exhausting enough on its own.
That's right!! We're expecting baby number two! This wee one is a girl and she is due 2 days before her big brother's birthday! That means that as of this writing, I am about 20 weeks along. Half-way there! This pregnancy is going by so much faster!

Well, I plan to get back into the blogging thing - I have a few posts in mind. To give you some clues and some heads up...

  • How to take 6 weeks of leave when you don't qualify for paid maternity leave. (stressful and a lot of planning, to say the least!)
  • DIY activity calendar for toddlers, kids, or the whole family. Plus I'd like to have downloadables available...
  • Daily routine for a 2-year-old
  • Planning for DISNEY WORLD - with a 3-year-old and 8-month-old (next November - I'm so excited!)
  • Crock-pot meals and one-pot meals (I've been doing a lot of these since I work nights and am not home for dinner most days. I try and start something before I go to work so that my DH - that's Darling Husband - can just serve it up, or throw everything I've prepped into a pan to make dinner easier on them)
So hopefully, I'll get back into a routine posting schedule soon - so keep on the lookout for some new content! :)

A Blogger Sabbatical

In case you didn't notice, I was away from this blog for quite a good long time. I'm sorry for that - it was unplanned.

In September 2014, baby G and I moved from California to Virginia, leaving my husband in CA to finish his work before joining us in October. We were moving in with my family, and G and I stayed in a small room while some renovations were being done to our little basement apartment. At the same time, I was also planning a bachelorette party and bridal shower for my best friend's wedding which was to be held a month after we arrived in Virginia.

We expected the renovations to be completed before October, and so had all of our belongings and furniture delivered to the house the day after my friend's wedding. But the renovations got pushed back... and pushed back... and pushed back... and they were finally completed shortly before Thanksgiving. So then we had to get to unpacking, and organizing, and cleaning, etc.

Of course, then the Holiday season began and we were incredibly busy with different families to visit, we took a short trip to Williamsburg, and just plain relaxing.

Then, I took the GRE right before the end of the year (so prior to that spent a lot of my free time studying), and my husband began his classes at the start of January. So I feel like I finally have a bit of time to devote to this blog again!

There's a lot of things coming up that I'm looking forward to - the big one being that our little boy is turning 1 year old in March! So we have a party to plan (so excited!) and him turning one also means a few other things are in store. Like his first dentist appointment, first haircut, and of course (we hope), his first words and other developmental milestones.

So there should be plenty for me to write about. I will begin applications to grad schools soon (I've already partially begun), so that take me away again, but hopefully not for long. (Of course, if I do get in to a program, who knows how long I'll have to devote to this what with studies and all).

But again, apologies for the unexplained absence!

Choosing a Babysitter: What to look for and questions to ask

What should you look for in a sitter? Well, my husband and I recently began searching for a sitter, though we have no immediate need for one yet. I’m not ready to be away from my 12-week-old boy; I am going to be a stay-at-home mom for a while too. But we will want to have a date night eventually, and I want to have a babysitter selected and available for when we are ready.

When interviewing and hiring a babysitter, you need to start by thinking of what you want in a sitter. Do you want someone that is a parent themselves, or a young college student? Do you want a sitter that will speak only English, or do you want someone that is fluent in another language? Do they need to be CPR and First Aid certified? Does your sitter need to have training in child development or education, or just plenty of experience? Would you like a sitter that will do light housework while the kids nap? Is a clean driving record important?

For us, the most important things in a sitter are experience with young infants, being comfortable with large dogs, and an outgoing nature. Even though our boy is still very young, we want a sitter that will take him out on walks and short outings – he seems to get bored and antsy when he’s inside all day. Behind those three things, we want someone who will continue to do baby sign language with him so it’s consistent, read him lots of books and sing songs. We don’t expect any cleaning or chores to get done – babysitters aren’t magicians, we don’t expect them to be able to accomplish things that two of us can’t do!

Also, think about what an acceptable rate is to you. It really depends on the area you live in – in Southern California where we reside (more specifically, Orange County) – the going rate is about $15 an hour. (The sitters we spoke to charge $17, $15, and $13). A high school or college student will accept a lower rate than someone who has been in the childcare business for many years. Some sitters and nannies may also charge higher rates for additional children, or if you run late coming home, or higher rates for additional services like cooking or cleaning.

There are a lot of good questions to ask sitters when interviewing, but speaking as both an interviewer and past interviewee, some of them are annoying, and some are more insightful than others. Here are (I think) the best questions:

What do you like most about being a babysitter? Obviously, you’re looking for an answer along the lines of  “I love kids,” not “It pays well.”
Do you often touch base with parents? This is important if you want a sitter that will text you updates and photos while you’re gone. (Something I want for at least the first few times away from my boy).
Do you have an example of a time you handled a crisis? Not everyone will have experience with an emergency (I never did have a crisis in my 3 years as a nanny/babysitter) but if they did have an emergency situation, you want to know that they will handle it calmly and take the appropriate steps (call 911, call mom, go to emergency room – whatever the situation dictates) – not a sitter that panics.
How would you describe your personality? Not the most important, but their answer can be very revealing. I like to hear things like, “friendly,” “outgoing,” “honest,” “easygoing,” “energetic,” and so on.
What are some of your hobbies? If you want a sitter that will spend time with your kids outside, you obviously don’t want to hear “reading magazines,” “playing video games,” and “watching tv.”
What do you look for in a family? They’re only just getting to know you, so you hope to hear some things that describe your family!
What are the top 3 characteristics you think are essential in caring for children? You’re going to be looking for things like, “patience,” “caring,” “kindness,” “sympathy,” “compassion,” “creativity,” and the like.

And finally... to search for sitters try Care.com or Sittercity.com (bonus: Sittercity is FREE for military!)

Screen Your Sunscreens: Why mineral is the way to go

I never really gave much thought to what went into the food I ate and the products I used until I got pregnant. And now that Baby G has arrived, I am even more concerned about what I use on him. I have sensitive skin, plus I am very fair with light eyes so I often have reactions to products and burn very easily. I have even had a few second-degree burns from the sun, which means that I am high-risk for developing skin cancer. (Just one blistering burn in childhood more than doubles your risk of skin cancer later in life). I have not always been the most diligent about applying sunscreen (especially when I was a teenager), but I have gotten better. My husband has helped a lot in that regard - reminding me to apply it when we're heading outside for a while. I still haven't gotten to the point where I apply it every day, multiple times a day... but I would like to.

Even though my boy seemed to get my husband's olive skin, I vowed to prevent those second-degree burns I had and to use sunscreen diligently. But because I recently became interested in the ingredients of everything we use, I wasn't just going to slather him in Banana Boat without doing some research first.

A baby's skin is much thinner than adults. I've read different numbers on it - some say it is 5 times thinner than an adults and others say only 20-30% thinner. But either way, that means that their body absorbs more of what is put on their skin than yours does. Which is why so many people are concerned about the chemicals in baby products: lotions, soaps, diapers, even clothing. I haven't gone completely to the organic and green end of the spectrum, but I do try to make easy, healthy, and smart choices and substitutions as much as I can - always doing my research first.

We are taking a trip to visit family at the end of June, and will be going to the beach when we're in Florida. I know that means a lot of being outside, in the sun, and on the sand (which the sun reflects off of). Though I will do my best to keep baby boy in the shade as much as possible, I still wanted to find a sunscreen that was safe for him just in case. Many sunscreens are not recommended for children under 6 months old, and since he will only be 3 months old on our trip, I wanted to find one that was appropriate for a baby his age.

I'm now on Top Mommy Blogs!

topmommyblogs.com

My blog is now listed on this wonderful site: Top Mommy Blogs (TMB)! I'm trying to put my blog out there and expand my reader base, now that I've been blogging consecutively for almost 5 months. TMB is a large directory of mommy and coupon blogs and it rates and ranks the blogs based on how many visits to TMB each blog generates. The top blogs obviously have the most active readers - and of course, that's where I'd like to be! :)
If you like my blog, and want to help me get more readers, please just click on the image or on the TMB button on the sidebar. One click equals one vote - and you can "vote" once each day!

Also, I just created my own little blog button:

<a href="http://pregotolegos.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1156.photobucket.com/albums/p575/LauraAnnRussell/Untitled_zps800a7b2a.png" alt="pregotolegos.blogspot.com" width="125" height="125" /></a>

If you would like to put my button on your own blog, just copy and paste the above code. And I will post your button as well! A fun little swap to help each other out! :D

Thank you so much!
